Indiana Lions for the ISBVI State Project

As Indiana Lions for the ISBVI, we recognize that while many organizations have specialized knowledge and expertise vital to the ongoing growth and development of blind and visually impaired youth, we specifically support the connection between the youth of Indiana and organizations of the blind (sometimes called “consumer groups”).

The majority of the youth in this state live in circumstances where they have few opportunities to meet successful blind or visually impaired adults. We believe that positive associations with, and mentorship by successful blind and visually impaired adults are essential to the positive development of the youth of our state.

  • To form an interactive, cooperative network among local, state, and national organizations to compile and disseminate information on leadership experiences and opportunities for Indiana's blind and visually impaired youth, their families, and VI teachers.
  • To cultivate a 'leadership mindset' that will assist Indiana's blind and visually impaired youth in developing independence, self-advocacy, and self-management skills.
  • To facilitate the development of a network which will encourage and guide blind and visually impaired youth to participate and commit to service in their home communities.
  • To eliminate traditional stereotypes of disabilities by educating the public on the capabilities of the blind and visually impaired youth of the 21st century.
